Why You Shouldn’t Need 4 Different Providers to Manage Your Weight, Hormones and Metabolism

If you’re seeing one provider for your weight, another for your hormones, another for your thyroid—and Googling which supplements you should take, you’re not alone.
Many women come to us feeling like their healthcare has become a collection of disconnected pieces.
They’re gaining weight despite eating well. They’re exhausted but can’t sleep. Their libido has changed. They have brain fog, mood changes, cravings, or stubborn belly fat. Maybe they’ve been told their labs are “normal,” but they still don’t feel like themselves.
The problem?
Your symptoms don’t necessarily exist in separate boxes.
Your hormones, metabolism, insulin sensitivity, thyroid function, nutrition, sleep, stress, and body composition can all influence one another.
That’s why treating one symptom at a time may not give you the complete picture.
Weight Gain May Be About More Than Calories
When someone comes to me struggling with weight, I don’t want to know only what she’s eating.
I want to understand what else is happening.
Is she sleeping?
Has her menstrual cycle changed?
Is she entering perimenopause?
Is she losing muscle?
Does she have symptoms of insulin resistance?
What does her thyroid evaluation show?
Are there nutritional deficiencies contributing to fatigue?
Is stress making it harder to maintain healthy habits?
And most importantly: What changed?
Weight gain can be multifactorial, particularly during the perimenopausal and menopausal transition.
Hormones and Metabolism Are Connected
Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone don’t operate independently from the rest of your body.
During perimenopause and menopause, hormonal fluctuations can coincide with changes in sleep, body composition, fat distribution, mood, energy, and insulin sensitivity.
This can create a frustrating cycle.
Poor sleep can make exercise and nutrition harder. Declining muscle mass can affect metabolic health. Changes in insulin sensitivity can make weight management more challenging. Hormonal symptoms can affect energy, motivation, and quality of life.
Simply addressing one piece may not address everything contributing to how you feel.
Insulin Resistance Can Start Before Diabetes
You don’t have to have diabetes to have metabolic dysfunction.
Insulin resistance can develop before blood glucose or A1C reaches the diabetic range.
That’s one reason I believe metabolic evaluation should look beyond the scale.
Depending on the patient, we may evaluate glucose and insulin markers alongside cholesterol, thyroid function, hormones, nutrient status, medical history, symptoms, and other relevant laboratory findings.
The goal isn’t to order labs just for the sake of ordering labs.
It’s to use the information to create a more individualized treatment plan.
Where Do HRT and GLP-1 Medications Fit?
For appropriate patients, hormone replacement therapy and GLP-1–based medications can be valuable tools—but they serve different purposes.
HRT is not a weight-loss treatment.
Menopausal hormone therapy is primarily used to treat appropriate menopausal symptoms and should be individualized based on symptoms, medical history, risks, and benefits.
GLP-1–based medications may be appropriate for certain patients with obesity, overweight with qualifying health conditions, or metabolic disease.
But neither should exist in a vacuum.
If we’re using medication to help someone lose weight, I also want to think about protein intake, muscle preservation, nutrition, exercise, sleep, metabolic health, and long-term maintenance.
If we’re treating menopausal symptoms, we should still consider what else may be contributing to fatigue, weight changes, poor sleep, or brain fog.
Supplements Should Be Personalized Too
The supplement aisle can become its own full-time job.
Magnesium. Vitamin D. Creatine. Omega-3s. B vitamins. Fiber. Probiotics. Adaptogens.
More isn’t automatically better.
Supplements should have a purpose and should complement—not replace—appropriate medical care, nutrition, movement, and lifestyle interventions.
When possible, recommendations should be based on your symptoms, diet, medical history, medications, laboratory findings, and treatment goals.
One Comprehensive Plan
This is exactly why I created our 12-Week Comprehensive Hormone + Metabolic Optimization Program at Dynamic NP Functional Wellness.
Rather than sending you in four different directions, we bring the pieces together.
Depending on your individual needs, your plan may include:
Comprehensive laboratory evaluation
Hormone assessment and HRT when appropriate
Medical weight management and GLP-1 therapy when appropriate
Thyroid and metabolic evaluation
Insulin resistance assessment
Identification of relevant nutrient deficiencies
Personalized supplement recommendations
Nutrition and protein guidance
Muscle-preservation strategies
Follow-up, monitoring, and ongoing support
Not every patient needs every treatment.
That’s the point.
Your treatment should be based on your symptoms, your labs, your medical history, and your goals.
The Goal Is More Than Weight Loss
Of course, seeing the scale move can feel great.
But I want patients to look beyond that number.
Are you sleeping better?
Do you have more energy?
Are you getting stronger?
Has your brain fog improved?
Are you protecting your muscle?
Are your metabolic markers improving?
Do you feel more like yourself?
And most importantly, are we creating a plan that you can realistically maintain?
The goal isn’t simply weight loss. It’s improving your overall health while addressing the factors that may have contributed to your symptoms in the first place.
