FAQ
What is a GLP-1 weight loss medication?
They mimic the actions of a natural hormone called GLP-1, which is released by the intestine in response to food intake. GLP-1 helps regulate blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin release, slowing down stomach emptying, reducing appetite, and inhibiting the release of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar.
Am I a good candidate for a GLP-1?
Generally, you may qualify for consideration if:
-
You have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above
-
You have a BMI of 27 or above with weight-related medical conditions
-
You do not have a condition that would prevent safe use
-
You are engaged in attempting to reach a healthier weight
Contraindications for GLP-1?
-
Allergies or Sensitivity: An allergy or sensitivity to the specific GLP-1 medication is a contraindication
-
History of Medullary Thyroid Cancer (MTC): People with a history of MTC or a family history of this type of cancer may be advised against using GLP-1 medications, as they have been associated with an increased risk of MTC
-
Severe Gastrointestinal Disorders: Conditions that may lead to severe gastrointestinal problems, such as gastroparesis, may be contraindications
-
Pancreatitis: A history of pancreatitis may be a contraindication, as some GLP-1 medications have been associated with an increased risk of pancreatitis
-
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: The use of GLP-1 medications during pregnancy and breastfeeding is usually not recommended due to limited safety data
